Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Tanzania is a comprehensive guide to the principles, practice, and legal framework governing alternative dispute resolution in Tanzania. Written by renowned legal scholar and ADR practitioner Julius Clement Mashamba, the book provides an in-depth examination of negotiation, mediation, conciliation, adjudication, and arbitration as effective alternatives to conventional court litigation.

The book traces the evolution of ADR from its modern origins in the United States to its adoption in African legal systems and its incorporation into Tanzania’s civil justice framework. It explains the significant legislative reforms that have made ADR an integral part of civil litigation in Tanzania, including amendments to the Civil Procedure Code that require courts to refer civil disputes to ADR mechanisms before proceeding to trial.

Combining theory with practical application, the book explores the legal principles, procedures, and best practices that govern ADR in Tanzania. It also examines emerging developments in domestic and international arbitration, making it an invaluable reference for legal professionals involved in commercial and cross-border dispute resolution.

Designed for both academic study and professional practice, this publication is an essential resource for advocates, judges, magistrates, arbitrators, mediators, State Attorneys, corporate counsel, academics, researchers, and law students. It also serves as a practical guide for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Tanzania’s evolving ADR landscape and international arbitration standards.
